Colleges apply for M. Phil. courses

Tiruchi: As a new development, several colleges affiliated to Bharathidasan University have submitted applications seeking permission to start regular M.Phil. programmes this year.

So far, the university has sanctioned M. Phil. programme in Commerce for four colleges, Economics for one college, English for one, Botany for two, Chemistry for three, Computer Science for three, Mathematics for one, Microbiology for two and Physics for one college.

Applications from 20 more colleges for starting M.Phil. in one or two disciplines will be scrutinised and sanctioned after visits by inspection committees by the end of September, said Registrar V. Radhakrishnan.

The M.Phil. programmes will be offered as per the revised guidelines framed last year to tone up quality.

The number of theory papers has been increased to four, which will include papers in emerging areas that may not have been covered in post-graduation.
