A display of creativity in colours

Painting competition on themes such as India 2020 evokes good response

Pudukottai: A painting competition organised by the Department of Visual Communication of J.J. College of Arts and Science for school students in Pudukottai recently evoked overwhelming response.

Four themes — environmental awareness, national integration, humaneness and India 2020 — were given and students could pick up a subject of their choice and interest to exhibit their talent and creativity. There was another option too: they could use either pencil or water colour.

With visual communication gaining popularity among the youth as a career option, the aptitude for this branch of study needs development of skills right from school. Hence, the need for such competitions, said K. Shanmuga Velayutham, Head of the Department of Visual Communication.

What made the competition different was the talk given by P. Thirunavukkarasu, lecturer, before the competition began. He explained how each colour should be used to denote a specific emotion, quality and concept.

The ‘do’s and don’ts helped the students understand the nuances of the art of painting. With clarity of thought and speed in action, they set out to paint on the given themes.

Kavitha, college trustee, said 41 students from 23 schools participated in the competition, which was inaugurated by District Educational Officer R.Boominathan.

Exclusive
Although painting competitions have become part of other events, this is the first time that an exclusive competition was organised to kindle the interest of towards expressing their creativity.

The students were also exposed to exhibits at the Physics Department and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department.

C. Vaidehi from St. John Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Aranthangi won the first prize for her painting on ‘Environmental awareness,’ while the second and third prizes went to J. Parvathy from Raniar Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, and K. Ganeshraj from Sri Kulapathy Balaiah Higher Secondary School.
