Varsity decision on arts, science deplored
Erode: Association of University Teachers (AUT), Tamil Nadu,
has deplored the decision of Anna University, Coimbatore, to
start arts and science courses.
Serious concern
In a release the Association said: “The AUT expresses
its serious concern over the fact that Anna University, Coimbatore,
has been shockingly deviating from its ordained objective of
promoting engineering education in the region.”
It added: “It is deplorable that the university has resorted
to offering arts and science courses in its affiliated engineering
colleges, instead of concentrating on higher standards of technical
education.”
Criticised
The university’s decision to affiliate colleges has also
come under criticism. The AUT said: “Disappointingly,
the university seems to have taken recourse to an affiliation
spree, granting affiliation without any rhyme or reason.
Diluted
Eligibility norms and conditions are so diluted that affiliation
for a course can be obtained just for the asking.
Affiliation is being proffered even to ‘stand-alone institutions’
and distance mode and off-campus centres.”
The association said the decision had affected arts and science
colleges in the region. “Arts and science colleges in
the region are already languishing for want of adequate students.
‘Woeful closure’
Paucity of students for the arts and science colleges will ultimately
lead to the woeful closure of the courses, render a number of
teachers surplus and dig an early grave to colleges in the region,”
the Association said.
