Counselling fee stands abolished

Chennai: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy on Thursday announced cancellation of the counselling fee. It had earlier been reduced from Rs. 300 to Rs. 200.

The Minister said the decision was taken after discussions with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Now only the application fee of Rs. 500 remained, he told reporters here.

Mr. Ponmudy emphasised the need for conducting counselling in one centre as this was the first time that admissions were being made after abolishing the Common Entrance Test. After the experience is evaluated, problems, if any, could be ironed out and a better model worked out next year. "We could even hold it in other centres next year. Let us make sure that the counselling this year goes ahead without any problems."

2000 students a day
A total of 2000 students would be called for interview each day. Each would be given 15-20 minutes to make their choice. There was no need for any student to stay for more than a day, Mr. Ponmudy said. The process would take about 50 days to complete. Counselling would go on during holidays without a break.

Special buses
Special buses, as usual, would be arranged from the Koyambedu bus terminus to the counselling venue, Anna University.

The student appearing for the counselling and one parent would be given 50 per cent concession for travelling from their hometowns to Chennai.

The Minister said his department would initiate legal steps against anyone spreading rumours on the chances of students. He claimed people who had lost out because they could not make a fast buck by coaching students for entrance examinations were behind the rumours.
