Girls excel again in Plus Two exams

State first and second rankers from Chennai DAV Higher Secondary School

Chennai: Girls stole the show at the Plus Two examinations, the results of which were released on Monday.

Led by Chennai students, they had an 84.6 overall pass percentage, compared to 77.4 by boys. The girls' performance this year was better than last year (75.4 per cent), while boys did better by 7.2 percentage points.

The overall pass percentage in the State this year is 81, compared to last year's 72.9, with schools in Namakkal producing a clutch of State toppers.

Chennai girls, S.Ramya and T.Rupika, both from DAV Higher Secondary School, Gopalapuram, emerged State first and second rank-holders, scoring 1,182 and 1,180 marks out of 1,200.

Four students — V.Jayamohan of SIV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sirumugai, Tirupur; S.Nivedhitha of Kurinji Higher Secondary School, Kavettipatty, Namakkal; M.Elavarasan of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Namakkal, and J. Keerthana of SRV Girls Higher Secondary School, Namakkal — share the third rank with a score of 1,179 marks.

Among students with languages other than Tamil as their first language, P.Indhu Reka of SV Hindu Girls Higher Secondary School, Tiruchi, came first with 1,190 marks.

Out of a total of 5,55,965 students (2,66,850 boys and 2,89,115 girls) who took the March examinations, 3,29,091 scored an aggregate of 60 per cent and above, Vasanthi Jeevanandam, Director of Government Examinations, said.

The tally of centums, however, showed considerable fluctuations. A total of 217 candidates scored centums in Physics (17 last year), 145 in Chemistry (119), 129 in Biology (81), 12 in Botany (55), one in Zoology (none last year), 1,568 in Mathematics (855), none in Computer Science (31), 288 in Commerce (529), 133 in Accountancy (314) and 156 in Business Mathematics (123).

Among subject toppers, S.Thahseen Nilofar of SRV Girls Higher Secondary School, Namakkal; P.Praveen Kumar of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Namakkal; P.Arvind of BVB Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thindal, Erode, and R.Nithyanandan of Kurinji Higher Secondary School, Kavettipatty, Namakkal bagged the first, second, third and fourth ranks respectively in all three subjects — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Nilofar, Praveen Kumar and R.Nithyanandan also stood first, second and third respectively in Biology. H.Meena of Avila Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, topped both in Botany and Zoology.

Marksheets will be available at the respective schools on May 25. Students can apply for photocopies of answer sheets for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany from May 15 to 18 at the offices of the Directorate of Government Examinations, Chennai, and chief education officers, district education offices and regional government examination centres.
