Chennai: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Wednesday underlined the significance of pursuing higher education and the need for educational institutions to accord priority to research activities.

"Universities should be dynamic and application oriented," the Governor told the second convocation of SRM University in Kattankulathur.

"The expansion of knowledge in research fields is necessary for the development of a nation," Mr. Barnala said. He added that priority should be given for research, as it would help widen intellectual horizons. "Increasing the level of knowledge, competency and capability in the youth is the need of the hour," he said.

All educational institutions, he added, should come forward and chalk out plans to tie-up with renowned institutions the world over for providing "value-based and international level education."

He urged students to sacrifice themselves for the welfare of the society and nation. "Be optimistic in mind, word and deed," he said.

Pointing out that education did not end with graduation, he called upon the students to continue updating their knowledge, specialise in their respective fields, and allot time for higher studies. He also handed over medals and certificates to rank holders.

Vice-chancellor P. Sathyanarayanan said 1,459 graduates of SRM University and 535 graduates in colleges of the SRM group and affiliated to Anna University received their degrees on Wednesday.

The function was held in the new auditorium constructed at a cost of Rs.15 crore.

The university received grants to the tune of Rs.2.1 crore from the Central Government for research in the fields of nanotechnology and biotechnology, Mr. Sathyanarayanan said.
