Nearly 3000 BE seats less in TN
Chennai: The number of BE/B Tech seats available in the 247
engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu has been reduced by nearly
3,000 for the forthcoming academic year 2007-08.
Besides, the student intake in 12 institutions, which cumulatively
account for another 4559 seats, has not been approved pending
submission of compliance reports.
A college-wise list of approved intake strength in undergraduate
engineering courses released by the All India Council for Technical
Education (AICTE) on Wednesday revealed that the student intake
has been slashed in 56 institutions.
While in some cases, the colleges themselves had surrendered
the seats in certain unpopular branches like Polymer Science;
the AICTE has barred admissions to the Seethai Ammal Engineering
College in Sivaganga.
The college had a sanctioned strength of 225 seats in four branches
in the current academic year.
As such 2980 seats have been slashed. A scrutiny of the list
revealed that while in some colleges the intake has been reduced
by 10, 15, 30 or 45 seats; in a few institutions as many as
105 to 150 seats have been slashed.
The AICTE undertakes an annual exercise to revise the students’
intake in each branch in colleges depending upon the academic-cum-physical
infrastructure and the mandatory compliance reports.
As per the list three colleges have more than 1,000 seats in
undergraduate and post graduate courses.
While the Coimbatore based PSG College of Technology has 1322
seats, the Chennai-based St. Peter’s Engineering College
owned by AIADMK leader Thambidurai has 1075 seats, and the Kongu
Engineering College in Erode has 1035 seats.
The complete list can be accessed on the website www.aicte.ernet.in.
