CET for Paramedical, Dental seats
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Private Professional Colleges Association
(Health Sciences) has decided to conduct a common entrance test
for the management quota seats in the 110 paramedical and dental
colleges in the state. Speaking to this newspaper on Tuesday,
Dr Ishari K. Ganesh, secretary of the association and chairman,
Vel’s Group of Institutions, said that a resolution to
conduct CET for paramedical courses was passed by their association
at its meeting held in the city on April 30. “As per the
Supreme Court verdict in the Islamic Academy of Education vs
state of Karnataka case, we are holding the common entrance
test for management quota seats for paramedical courses, including
Dental (B.D.S), Homoeopathy (B.H.M.S), Siddha (B.S.M.S), Ayurveda
(B.A.M.S), Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (B.N.Y.S), Pharmacy
(B.Pharm), Nursing (B.Sc), Physiotherapy (B.P.T.) and Occupational
Therapy (B.O.T.),” Dr Ganesh said.
The association has also opposed the surrendering of 65 percent
of its seats to the government. It has urged the state government
to follow the Karnataka model instead. “The medical colleges
in Karnataka have surrendered only 30 percent seats to the state
government and retained the remaining as management quota seats,”
Dr Ganesh pointed out.
“In engineering stream, the seat sharing ratio of 65:35
for government and managements respectively works well, as there
are about 80,000 seats available. But it is not possible in
our case, as we only have a total of 4,000 seats,” Dr
Ganesh said. The association has also urged the state government
to hike the fees for B. Pharm from Rs 41,000 to Rs 75,000 and
for B.D.S course from the present Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh.
The association had submitted a memorandum to the state health
minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and health secretary V.K. Subburaj
requesting them to relax the quota and fee for the colleges
under the association.
