Engineering counselling to start today

Chennai: Single window counselling for admission to engineering colleges in the State is all set to commence on Wednesday, Anna University Vice Chancellor D. Vishwanathan said here on Tuesday.

Counselling will begin at 10 a.m. on the Anna University campus. On the first day, 262 candidates under the Physically Handicapped quota have been invited for counselling. Candidates from the vocational stream (2101) and those seeking admission under the sports quota (205) will appear for single window counselling on July 19, 20 and 21. Students from other States will be accommodated in engineering colleges on June 22. General counselling will begin on July 23. A total of 91,093 candidates have been cleared under the last category. The last day of the counselling will be dedicated to students who have taken the supplementary exams and passed.

The total number of seats available in the engineering stream this year is 1,06,000, of which 65,500 seats are under the government quota, Dr. Vishwanathan said.

This year, an extra display screen has been arranged, and other facilities for students and parents, such as drinking water and toilets, have been provided.

There is a ban on distributing pamphlets in the halls where the counselling is on. Action will be taken against those doing so, Dr. Vishwanathan warned. In response to a question from reporters about including 15 colleges that had been denied recognition and then granted recognition by the AICTE in the present counselling schedule, the Vice-Chancellor said they had not yet received any communication from the AICTE in this regard.

However, if the colleges are able to prove that they have been recognised, they would be incorporated as and when they come into the counselling schedule, he said.

Recognition sought

Two new colleges have applied for recognition in the Chennai region and if inspection of their infrastructure proves satisfactory, they might be included at a later stage of counselling, he said.
