Government to move court over medical fee structure
Chennai: The State Government will move the court to bring down
the fees in self-financing medical colleges, according to Health
Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran.
The decision follows a stay obtained from the High Court by
Chettinadu Medical College, Kancheepuram, and P.S.G. Medical
College, Coimbatore, against implementing the fee structure
stipulated by the Government for academic year 2007-08.
On the basis of the recommendation made by the Justice Raman
Committee, the Minister had issued a directive stipulating the
fees that can be collected for this academic year by self-financing
medical colleges affiliated to Dr. MGR Medical University. The
Chettinadu Medical College at Padur was allowed to collect Rs.
3 lakh with a 15 per cent subsidy for poor students. The P.S.G.
Medical College, Coimbatore, could collect Rs. 2.25 lakh and
Shri Mookambikai Medical College, Kanyakumari, Rs. 2.40 lakh.
