First phase of MBBS counselling begins

Minister hands over allotment letters to first ten rankers

Chennai: The first phase of counselling for admissions to MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu began on Monday with Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran handing over allotment letters to first ten rankers at the Directorate of Medical Education, here.

P. Praveen Kumar of SRV Boys HSS, Rasipuram, was the first to receive the letter. Formally inaugurating the counselling at a brief function, Mr. Ramachandran said students could join allotted colleges on Wednesday. Classes will begin on August 1. A total of 1,398 seats in 14 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu and 201 seats from self-financing colleges allotted to the Government would be filled during the first and second phases of counselling, he said. Counselling would also be held for 85 dental seats in the government sector and 326 in the private sector.

Special sessions

A total of 2,310 students have been called during the first phase of counselling that will continue until July 16. Special counselling sessions for the physically handicapped, ex-servicemen’s children and sportspersons were held on Monday, in addition to allotment of seats for the first ten rankers. As announced earlier, the cut-off mark for OC is 197.00, BC 194.5, MBC 191.75, SC 187.25 and ST 179.

Answering a question on the rank list being contested in court at an impromptu press meet later, Mr. Ramachandran said the Government had submitted a detailed description of the process it had followed to arrive at the rank list and it was up to the court to decide.

With reference to the fee structure for the current year, the Minister said an MBBS course in the government sector cost only Rs.4,000 per annum, while for BDS course it was Rs.2,000. This year, self-financing colleges would have to follow the directions of the Raman Committee constituted to go into the fee structure of self-financing colleges.

Chettinad Medical College, Kancheepuram, can charge Rs.3 lakh (with a 15 per cent concession for economically-weaker students) and PSG Medical College, Coimbatore, Rs.2.25 lakh, according to the Committee’s recommendations. As per the reservation policy, 433 seats are available for the OCs (31 per cent of the total of 1398); 419 for BCs (30 per cent); 280 for MBCs (20 per cent); 252 for SCs (18 per cent) and 14 seats for STs (1 per cent).
