Varsity to offer B.Ed. in Tamil medium soon

Expected to be a boon for primary and secondary teachers
  • Akin to the English medium course, there will be 500 seats for the Tamil medium programme
Tiruchi: The Centre for Distance Education (CDE), Bharathidasan University, is likely to introduce B.Ed. under Tamil medium from the current academic year.

The university has replied to certain queries made by the National Council for Teacher Education and the approval is expected soon. The programme could be started within a few months, according to Baskaran, CDE Director.

Akin to the B.Ed. programme through English medium introduced last year, there would be 500 seats for the Tamil medium programme.

While the English medium programme was meant to facilitate untrained teachers in matriculation and other self-financing schools to acquire a professional degree, the Tamil medium programme on the anvil is expected to be a boon for primary and secondary teachers in Government schools.

These teachers would have entered into services with Plus-Two qualification and a Diploma in Teacher Training, and would have completed graduation and post-graduation through correspondence.

By virtue of completing the B.Ed. degree through the correspondence programme, they could gain eligibility for teaching in higher standards and go up the career ladder.

At TNOU too

At present, only the Tamil Nadu Open University offers the B.Ed. programme in Tamil medium. The Bharathidasan University is poised to be the first territorial varsity to offer B.Ed. in Tamil Medium. It was the first among the territorial varsities to offer B.Ed. in English Medium. The programme received an overwhelming patronage from teachers in matriculation schools.

NCTE expectation

The NCTE expects any university offering B.Ed. through correspondence to have a certain number of regular teachers on rolls.

However, for correspondence programmes, it is usual for the universities to utilise the services of teachers of the B.Ed. regular colleges, which function as centres for distance education.

Nevertheless, the CDE is looking forward to appointing teachers such that even M. Ed. could be offered through correspondence, said Mr. Baskaran.
