Three medical colleges recognition withheld
Chennai: The Medical Council of India has withheld recognition
for three Government Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu –
Government Vellore Medical College, Vellore, Kanyakumari Government
Medical College, Asaripallam, and Theni Government Medical College
– and one private medical college – Sree Mookambika
Institute of Medical Sciences, Kanyakumari.
“Not Recommended for Renewal of Permission for 2007-2008”
is what the MCI states against the names of these colleges on
its website. In effect, this means a drastic reduction of 300
seats (including seats reserved for the All India Quota) available
in the Tamil Nadu Government pool. The three colleges each has
a sanctioned strength of 100 seats.
A further 100 seats will be reduced in the private college pool
– the number of seats that was originally sanctioned to
Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences.
The four institutions are relatively new.
The Kanyakumari Medical College was started in 2003; Government
Vellore Medical College in 2005 and Theni Government Medical
College in 2006.
A top official in the Health department told The Hindu that
the Government had not received any communication from the MCI
in this regard. According to him, after inspection, the MCI
team had indicated that there were some “small flaws”
in the three government colleges. He added that the State had
rectified these mistakes, especially increased the staff strength,
and re-sent their applications to the MCI. He was confident
that it was only a matter of time before the MCI renewed permission
for these colleges.
The counselling schedule too cannot be announced in the State
for MBBS and BDS courses, unless the final position on the recognition
of colleges is known. This will set off a chain reaction as
counselling for engineering admissions can be held only after
the medical counselling is over.
