"CET uncertainty should not be prolonged"

Chennai: The Madras High Court has sought to know what contingency plan the Tamil Nadu Government has to hold the Common Entrance Test (CET) if presidential assent to its legislation abolishing the CET system was either not given or delayed.

When a batch of public interest litigation petitions questioning the validity of the Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Institution Education Act 2006 came up for admission on Thursday, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru said students should not face a dilemma.

Wondering whether the PILs, filed even as the impugned legislation is awaiting presidential assent, were maintainable at all, the Bench however said students should know where they stood vis- a- vis the CET, and added that the uncertainty should not be prolonged. The Bench posted the matter to February 23 for further proceedings.
