Marks alone `don't maketh the man'
De-stressing the examination system is a very challenging task, says official The aim of education `should be breeding of good leaders'
Chennai: Students and teachers rush to meetings purporting to tell them how to achieve high scores in examinations. Marks continue to be the deciding factor. But the aim of school or university education is to groom capable leaders, Director of Matriculation Schools D. Jagannathan said on Tuesday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the symposium on student
leadership organised by the St. John's Matriculation Higher
Secondary School (Mandaveli). "De-stressing the examination
system is a very challenging task," he said.
Urging students to draw inspiration from leaders such as Mahatma
Gandhi, he said such programmes paved way for their becoming
good leaders. Students of Classes XI and XII from nearly 60
matriculation schools in the city took part in the symposium,
held in commemoration of the school's decennial year celebrations.
R. Kishore Kumar, Dean of St. John's Group of Schools, said
the symposium was aimed at informing students about skills they
would require as professionals.
"You might need these skills after 10 years. But you may
not be able to equip yourself in the last minute," he said.
The daylong symposium featured talks by resource persons including
K. Pandia Rajan, managing director, Ma Foi; J.N.Reddy, director,
MAX Academy for Excellence; academician Nalini Parthiban and
career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi.
Mental health
Topics such as time management, tackling peer group pressure,
reducing stress, enriching mental health and emotional stability
and interview skills were covered.
