One lakh students may enrol in CA course

Enrolment is expected to go up nearly three fold in 2007
  • Reduction of course duration has attracted more students
  • Nearly 8,000 students qualify every year as Chartered Accountants
Chennai:Enrolment in the chartered accountancy (CA) course is expected to go up nearly three fold next year, according to the president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, T.N. Manoharan.

He told presspersons here on Thursday that in the last three years, the enrolment was about 35,000 a year. It was expected to touch one lakh in 2007.

Reduction of the course duration to four years, easy entry without diluting standards (making the methodology easy), reform in the examination pattern and increasing job opportunities were among the reasons for the higher enrolment.

Earlier, the course duration was five-and-a-half years; hence, there was hesitation among candidates to join. Now, besides reducing the duration, the course would include training in information technology, professional competency and personality development. Further, in the examination, practical questions and case studies would also be included.

Mr. Manoharan said the new CA curriculum was launched on September 13 this year. A total of 37,704 students had switched over from the old scheme to the new, and 18,413 candidates had freshly enrolled themselves for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT) course. The first CPT examination under the new scheme would be held on November 12 at 146 centres in about 108 cities in the country, and in Dubai and Kathmandu.

At present, the institute had about 1.32 lakh members. Every year, nearly 8,000 students qualified themselves as chartered accountants. Scrutiny of Recent membership data revealed that new members joining the profession were being absorbed by the corporate sector. A majority got a remuneration between Rs. 4 four lakh and Rs. 7 seven lakh per annum. Freshers were able to get a salary up to Rs. 27 lakh per annum for foreign placements.

The institute President said a task force had been constituted for to study the convergence of Indian accounting standards with the international ones. It would examine the various issues involved and submit a report in six months.

The Auditing and Assurance Standard 35 had come into effect from November 1. It was materially in conformity with the corresponding International Standard on Assurance Engagements (ISAE) 3400,
