Communication labs must for engineering colleges
Lab study will be introduced in fifth semester from next year, says Anna University Vice-Chancellor
- Resolution passed by Academic Council to come into effect this month
- Papers in communication skills will be made compulsory
Chennai: Anna University has made it mandatory for all engineering colleges in the State to include communication
laboratory-based components as part of the syllabus from the third year.
"The resolution has been passed by the university's Academic Council and will come into effect from this month
for all colleges under our jurisdiction.
This year, lab study has been introduced in the sixth semester and from next year, it will be from the fifth
semester," Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan told reporters on Sunday.
Papers in communication skills and advanced communication skills will be made compulsory to ensure students do
not lose out during recruitment owing to lack of communication skills.
All colleges have been instructed to set up communication labs which will be equipped with aids for teaching
English pronunciation, spoken English and communication skills.
The university has also started a school adoption programme under which neighbourhood schools can access the
mathematics, physics and chemistry laboratories in engineering colleges.
Around 1,500 schools, especially in rural areas, are expected to benefit.
The university has initiated measures to tide over the employability crisis.
Part of the steps is a tie-up with the Confederation of Indian Industry to organise awareness programmes among
students on core engineering subjects.
"Though 10,000 jobs are available in the government and private sectors for civil engineering graduates, there are
no applicants as all students have opted for information technology jobs. Also, we are aiming at taking up faculty
development programmes in a big way, as not many engineering colleges have availed themselves of the university's
EDUSAT facility," Mr. Viswanathan said.
Earlier, Mr. Viswanathan gave away appointment letters to 579 students who had been recruited through the university's
Tamil Nadu State Level Placement Programme.
A total of 19,200 students from 222 colleges had participated in the programme, of which 3,300 had been recruited.
"Around 2,100 students from the university's four constituent colleges have already been placed through our campus
recruitment drive. Appointment letters have already been distributed to successful candidates from Salem, Madurai and Dindigul
districts for the TNSLPP. The process will start soon for Coimbatore," P. Mannar Jawahar, Director, Centre for University-Industry
Interaction, said.
Among the students who received appointment letters on Sunday, 250 had been recruited by Wipro Infotech,
182 by Cognizant Technology Solutions, 58 by Tata Consultancy Services, 30 by Saipem, 16 by the Godrej Group,
12 by Mahindra & Mahindra, 18 by Infosys Technologies, eight by Caritor and five by the Essar group.
