Abolition of CET challenged
No legislative competence for the State to come out with such legislation: petitioner
Chennai: A public interest litigation petition, challenging the Tamil Nadu Government's move to abolish the Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional courses, has been filed in the Madras High Court.
V. Manikandan, in his petition, prayed for an order declaring as unconstitutional the Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Act 2006, dispensing with the CET for professional courses.
Noting that the Supreme Court and the High Court had ruled that the CET could not be dispensed with, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the Higher Education Secretary to consider CET marks alone for admission to professional courses in 2007-08. The presumption that rural students would benefit from the abolition of the CET was not correct, as the moderation/scaling formula framed by the Government would help a large number of Central Board for Secondary Education students. He feared that the standard deviation or the scaling process suggested by the Government for the coming academic year would give room for marks manipulation. .
