"Engineering colleges will be encouraged to adopt schools"

Anna University to provide expertise for improving standard of students Varsity to provide expertise for improving standard of students

Salem: Anna University proposes to encourage every engineering college in the State to adopt five schools for improving school education standard, Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan has said.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, he said a number of engineering seats remained vacant as the colleges could not find students with the minimum eligible marks. The university and its affiliated colleges had a total of one lakh seats.

Hence, the university had decided to encourage the colleges to assist nearby schools by adopting them and providing the necessary expertise to improve the standard of the students of class X, Plus I and Plus II.

Soft skills
He said the university would introduce a compulsory paper on soft skills and communication skills from December to improve the employability of the students. All engineering students in the first, second and third years of the university and its affiliated colleges would be covered.

Mr. Viswanathan said the university was expecting about 25,000 students to get placements through the Tamil Nadu State Level Placement Programme (TNSLPP).

So far, more than 2,500 students had got placements. He said the university would invite companies to conduct campus interviews first through the TNSLPP in the next academic year to encourage students of core engineering to choose jobs in their fields.

Improvement in pass percentage
Following the ban on the use of mobile phones and the conduct of cultural programmes and fashion shows, the pass percentage and employability of the students had increased, he claimed.
