Counselling for medical courses begins on Monday
Schedule clashes with entrance tests for engineering and
medical admissions
- Counselling on till July 17
- Entrance tests on July 14, 15 and 16
- Those interested in trying for both in a quandary
Chennai: With general counselling under the single window system for admissions to medical courses scheduled to start on Monday, a clash of dates is on the cards for students who wish to take entrance tests being held by private institutions for admissions to medical and engineering courses.
On Saturday, the Directorate of Medical Education announced that the first phase would start on Monday and go on till July 17. Allotment orders for the top eleven candidates would be issued by K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, a press release from the DME said.
The counselling will be held at the Directorate of Medical Education, Chennai. A total of 1,972 candidates are scheduled to attend the counselling for 1,545 seats in the government pool.
The counselling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m for candidates from special categories such as children of freedom fighters and ex-servicemen and the physically handicapped, to be followed by candidates from the general category. For BC and MBC candidates, it will be held on July 15, for SC candidates on July 16 and ST candidates on July 17.
Candidates will be called in the order of revised merit list. The schedule will be made available on http://www.tnhealth.org./
Candidates who have gone in for revaluation/retotalling of marks can also attend the counselling as per the schedule, as can those whose marks fall within the notified range but have not received call letters. The counselling will be held for seats available with all government medical colleges, IRT Perundurai Medical College, and the Tamil Nadu Government Dental College, Chennai. Students said they were taken by surprise at the short notice, as many of them have to travel from various parts of the State. The Tamil Nadu Private Medical Colleges Association scheduled its entrance test for admission to management quota seats for July 14 and the Consortium of Self-financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges for July 15 and 16. .
Bid to avoid delay
"The intention (of starting counselling on Monday) is to ensure that there are no further delay in admission. We were only awaiting the High Court's verdict on Friday on taking the Plus Two marks along with the marks obtained in the common entrance test as the basis for MBBS/BDS admissions. As engineering counselling has to start after medical counselling closes, any further delay will complicate matters,'' Mr. Ramachandran told The Hindu .
