7 Chennai colleges granted autonomy

It will be valid till 2011 and subject to review every five years

Chennai: For seven Chennai-based colleges, the 150th year celebrations of Madras University will now gain added resonance.

They join a select list of 25 institutions, the highest in the region so far, that have been granted autonomy status by the university.

Among the new entrants are five aided colleges — Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women, Teynampet; The Madras School of Social Work, Egmore; S.D.N.Bhatt Vaishnav College, Chromepet; D.B.Jain College, Thorapakkam and The New College, Royapettah — and two education colleges — the Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education and the Meston College of Education.

Certificates distributed
Vice Chancellor S.P.Thyagarajan gave away the autonomy certificates on Wednesday.

The autonomy will be valid till 2011 and subject to review every five years.

One more college, the Vyasarpadi-based Dr.Ambedkar College of Arts and Sciences, will be granted the status in the next few days, Dr. Thyagarajan said.
