Focus on containing failures in Class XII and X examinations
Chennai: The State Education Department will focus on bringing
down failures in the Class XII and X examinations this year,
particularly in government schools.
Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu told The Hindu that 14 districts that scored below the State average pass percentage (74.5 %) in HSC had been identified.
Feedback
District Educational Officers would visit the schools periodically to closely monitor the performance of students and would provide the department with feedback on a regular basis.
The Minister chaired a two-day meeting, which began on Monday, with Chief Educational Officers (CEOs), District Educational Officers (DEOs) and District Elementary Education Officers (DEEOs) from all over Tamil Nadu to discuss the plan of action for the new academic year. Several issues including the fall in pass percentage were discussed. Last year, 76.8 percent of the students passed the HSC (Class Twelve) examination.
"About 25 per cent of the candidates who appeared for the HSC (Class XII) examination did not pass. This means one in every four candidates has failed. This is not a healthy trend," he said.
Failure in single subject
Speaking about the number of failures in a single subject, Mr. Thennarasu said if a student could clear all subjects except one, he or she would not have had learning difficulty. If teachers provided adequate coaching and more importantly, individual attention, students could be trained well enough to clear all the papers, he said.
Training for teachers
Teachers of government schools, which recorded hundred per cent pass, would train teachers of other schools and discuss effective teaching methodologies to produce better results. The Minister said shortage of teachers could not be cited as a reason for poor performance from now on, as vacancies across the State were being filled.
Nearly 2,600 teachers selected by the Teachers Recruitment Board were given appointment orders during the counselling session conducted here on June 17 and 18.
