150 more MBBS seats on cards
- The number of seats available in the State will go up to 1,700
Chennai: The seat matrix for the MBBS degree programme in government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu remains the same as last year with 1,625 seats.
But, students can rejoice at the fact that another 150 MBBS seats may be available in the private sector, as the Medical Council of India has approved 150 seats in Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute at Kancheepuram this year.
The MCI's website, www.mciindia.org, states that the college has obtained approval for this year.
According to State norms, at least 75 seats — half the sanctioned intake — should be available for the government pool, to be filled through the single window mode. With this, the number of seats available in the State will go up to 1,700.
It is also expected that the Medical Council of India will grant approval for the Government Medical College in Theni.
The earlier regime in the State had gone to the Supreme Court seeking early approval for the medical college.
The health establishment in the State is eagerly awaiting the formal announcement for the increase in seats. This will increase the total number of seats by another 100.
The seat increase can lead to a change in the possible cut-off marks this year — a difference of at least 0.25 points — which could be crucial, especially for candidates from the MBC and Sheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes.
Tamil Nadu has 14 government medical colleges with an intake of 1,625, the highest in the country, besides a portion of the seats in three private sector institutions.
Fifteen per cent of the total seats are made available for the all-India quota.
However, some of the seats are said to have been returned to Tamil Nadu in the past.
The Medical Council has extended the approval for the recently started government colleges at Vellore (last year) and Kanyakumari (two years ago).
The Government runs only one dental college in Chennai, with an intake of 100 seats.
